Commentary: Trump Is the Only Candidate Who will Save American Energy

by JR Majewski

If past performance is the best predictor of future performance, President Trump has proved his bona fides when it comes to fortifying American energy dominance. He unleashed America’s potential, catapulting us to the top spot in global oil and natural gas production. This not only bolstered our economy, but also strengthened our national security by reducing dependence on foreign energy sources like Russia and

But it can’t end at fossil fuels—the US bolstering a diverse energy mix that includes oil, gas, nuclear, renewables, and the pivotal role of nuclear power, is vital for a secure and environmentally sustainable energy strategy. Trump gets that. Unlike his opponents, who often pit different energy sources against each other, Trump advocates for a balanced, all-of-the-above strategy. The Trump Administration’s streamlining of nuclear industry regulations and cogent investments in advanced technologies like next-generation reactors and innovative solutions like nuclear fuel reprocessing is laying the groundwork for what could be nuclear renaissance.

Are regulatory cuts the sexiest topic on earth to talk about? No. But stripping the regulatory burden is perhaps Trump’s most valuable asset in reshaping America’s energy landscape. By cutting through red tape and eliminating unnecessary obstacles, he can create an environment that fosters innovation and attracts investment in groundbreaking energy technologies. This is particularly crucial for advancing nuclear technology. By streamlining the regulatory process for new reactor designs and fuel cycle technologies, Trump can accelerate the development and deployment of safer, more efficient nuclear power plants.

Trump’s signing of the Nuclear Energy Innovation and Modernization Act (NEIMA) was a crucial first step. This bipartisan legislation streamlined the licensing process for advanced nuclear reactors and set the stage for a nuclear renaissance. Now, it’s time to take the next bold step: reprocessing spent nuclear fuel. Reprocessing is a game-changing technology that addresses two critical issues simultaneously. First, it significantly reduces nuclear waste, turning a liability into an asset. Second, it provides fuel for advanced reactors, including those that could power future space missions and enhance our national defense capabilities.

As someone with decades of experience in the nuclear industry, I believe Trump’s keen understanding of regulatory burdens and his commitment to innovation make him uniquely qualified to revolutionize our nuclear sector. Trump can ensure America remains at the forefront of nuclear innovation, securing our energy independence while also advancing our capabilities in space exploration and national defense:

1. Direct the Department of Energy to fast-track research and development in fuel reprocessing technologies.

2. Work with Congress to update regulations, allowing for the safe and efficient implementation of reprocessing facilities.

3. Incentivize private sector investment in reprocessing and advanced reactor technologies.

4. Integrate reprocessing into our national space exploration strategy, positioning America to lead in deep space missions.

5. Explore the use of advanced nuclear technologies, powered by reprocessed fuel, for military applications to enhance our national security.

By taking these steps, this forward-thinking approach aligns perfectly with Trump’s vision of American greatness and technological leadership.
